Find the right equipment

Choosing your CAT and Genny equipment

Start with the equipment you need, then compare model features, condition and what is included.

A locator or a complete kit?

Start by deciding whether you need a standalone locator or a kit containing both the locator and signal generator. If you already own equipment, check compatibility before choosing another generator or accessory.

Compare the included leads, clamps, bags and other accessories on each listing. A standalone locator and a complete kit can look similar in search results but contain different equipment.

Which features do you need?

Depth estimation, usage records and GPS are separate capabilities. In Radiodetection’s range, CAT4+ adds depth measurement to CAT4, while gCAT4+ adds GPS-linked usage recording and connectivity.

Compare each model’s locating modes, depth estimation and recording features to choose the functions your work needs.

New or refurbished?

Compare purchase price, cosmetic condition, included accessories, warranty and calibration documentation. Our refurbished CAT4-family locators and kits include a 12-month warranty and 12-month calibration. Refurbished equipment can reduce your initial cost; new equipment may suit procurement requirements or a preference for unused stock.

Compare the condition and included accessories on the product page. Read our new versus refurbished CAT4 guide.

Buying for ongoing work, or hiring?

Consider how often you will use the equipment and whether you need it for one project or as part of your regular kit. Compare the hire period and terms with the purchase cost of a suitable new or refurbished model.

Understand the limitations. CAT and Genny equipment supports the detection and tracing of buried services, but detection depends on the service, available signal, equipment and conditions. Non-metallic services can require additional tracing equipment. Use the equipment alongside appropriate plans, training and safe working procedures. Read HSE guidance on underground services.

CAT and Genny questions

Practical answers to help you narrow the range. Open the questions that matter to your purchase.

Do I need a Genny as well as a CAT?

A Genny applies a traceable signal that a compatible CAT can detect. It helps with tracing selected services that may be difficult to locate using passive signals alone. Check that the locator and generator are compatible, and that your kit includes the accessories needed for your work.

What is included in a complete kit?

Check the individual listing for the locator, generator and included accessories. Leads, clamps, bags and other items vary between kits. Compare the kit contents and optional accessories before ordering.

Which models provide depth estimation?

In the Radiodetection CAT4 family, the “+” models include depth estimation. Other manufacturers use different model names, so check the specification for the exact locator and its compatible signal generator. Depth estimates depend on suitable signals and conditions; they do not establish a safe digging depth.

What should I check when buying refurbished?

Our refurbished CAT4-family locators and kits include a 12-month warranty and 12-month calibration. Check the exact model, cosmetic grade, included equipment and calibration documentation. Compare equivalent units or kits, and read the listing for any condition-specific information. Warranty cover and calibration are separate parts of the offer.

Can a CAT detect plastic pipes?

A CAT does not directly detect the plastic material. Locating a non-metallic pipe may require a compatible sonde, a traceable rod or tracer wire, depending on the service and access. Check equipment compatibility and the appropriate locating method before choosing accessories. Explore sondes and locating equipment.
